September 4, 1942 – May 16, 2020

Passed away peacefully at Health Sciences North in the early morning hours with his loving wife Kate by his side. Predeceased by his parents Dr. Percival and Mary Young of Sturgeon Falls.  He is survived by his wife and best friend, Kate (nee Catherine Kennedy), his brother Ian Young (Shirley) and sister Heather Parker (Pat), his daughter Genevieve Newton (Geoffrey) and stepdaughter Gina Kennedy, stepson Alex Kennedy (Cynara), as well as his nieces and nephews Katherine Young Adamson (Ashley), Karen Jasie (Todd), Brian Parker (Karen), Bradley Parker (Jennifer Lavinia), David Parker (Michelle). Grand Uncle to Tyler, Cassidy, Matthew, Samuel, Eva, Anderson, Abby, Emma, Megan, Andrew & Robin. He was very proud of his grandchildren Callan, James, Victoria and Nicholas and they will all miss him dearly. Roger was born and raised in Sturgeon Falls. After graduating in 1967 from the University of Waterloo as an Optometrist, Roger moved to Sudbury and practiced Optometry there for over 50 years.  Roger took great pride in his profession, was very devoted to his patients, and was very active in the community. Roger was a kind, loving, humble, and incredibly hard-working man.  He enjoyed simplicity, which included observing nature, taking walks, listening to music, and collecting art of all kinds.  Roger always thought it was a shame to waste a beautiful day. Roger had a special love for the family cottage on Lake Nipissing and spent time there every year with family and friends.  For 60 years he joined his Sturgeon buddies for their annual May fishing weekend on Sandy Island. Roger had a special place in his heart for rescue dogs. He will be sadly missed by Stella, but join his long-time sidekick Rhodie, who will be excited to see him again. He led a fulfilling and productive life; unfortunately, we lost him far too soon. He was an inspiration to us, and his memory is a blessing. We want to thank Christine for the exemplary home nursing care and Dr. Sarah Duncan, Dr. Ravi Singh, Dr. Michael Pianezza and the medical team at Health Sciences North. We greatly appreciate everyone’s care and compassion and for going above and beyond to assist him throughout this difficult year. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. As expressions of sympathy, donations can be made to the Salvation Army Corps Sudbury Ontario or Pet Save. Arrangements have been entrusted to Ranger’s Cremation and Burial Services Ltd.
