COVID-19 outbreak in eastern Ontario Mennonite community reaches 55 cases

RENFREW, Ont. — Public health officials say a COVID-19 outbreak in a small community in eastern Ontario has reached 55 COVID-19 cases.

The Renfrew public health unit says about half those tested in the Mennonite community tested positive.

The unit's acting medical officer calls the group of roughly 200 people in Whitewater Region, Ont., tightly knit.

Dr. Robert Cushman says COVID likely spread during travel between similar communities in southern Ontario.

He says symptoms began showing last week and more testing is being done.

Cushman says the virus has not spread from the community to non-members.
