Ontario teen who struck and killed two children sentenced to year in facility

A 17-year-old boy has been sentenced to a year in an open-custody facility and six months of community supervision in a crash that killed two children in Vaughan, Ont., north of Toronto.

York Regional Police say the teen, who was 16 at the time of the crash, also faces a six-year driving  ban.

They say he pleaded guilty in December to two counts of dangerous driving causing death and one of dangerous driving causing bodily harm.

Police say the boy, who cannot be identified because he is a minor, was at the wheel of a Mercedes that went off the road and struck three people in a residential driveway on May 16, 2021.

Two of the victims, identified by their parents as 10-year-old Anaya Chaudhari and four-year-old Jax Chaudhari, died in hospital. The other, a neighbour, was injured.

Speaking outside a Newmarket, Ont., courthouse on Monday, the children's parents, Binta Patel and Ketan Chaudhari, said the incident devastated their lives in an instant and left them traumatized.

"A few seconds, just a few seconds, transformed this day, shattered our family and changed our entire existence," Patel said through tears.

"Every day, every moment, we miss Anaya and Jax, the family we had and the people we once were ... we live with so much sadness and pain now."

She said their surviving daughter witnessed the incident and has had to deal with the loss of her siblings.
