OAKVILLE, Ont. — A Halton region police officer faces criminal assault and mischief charges.
Police say the charges stem from last April, when four officers responded to a man loitering in Oakville, Ont.
The service says one officer made physical contact with the man.
Halton region police say their chief had the officer suspended with pay as a result.
They say Chief Stephen Tanner also asked Waterloo regional police to investigate.
The constable involved has now been charged with assault with a weapon and mischief under $5,000.
The three other officers at the incident were reassigned to administrative jobs pending the outcome of the investigation by the Waterloo force, Halton police said.
The charged officer has been released and is scheduled to appear in court on March 9. He remains suspended with pay under the Police Services Act.
Now that the criminal investigation has concluded, an internal disciplinary probe of the actions of all four officers under will begin, the police service said.
