A preliminary hearing is underway before a provincial court judge who will determine if a Sudbury man will stand trial on charges relating to a boating accident that cost a young man his life last summer.

Michael Christakos, 39, faces numerous charges in relation to an incident on Ramsey Lake last summer. The presiding judge will rule following the week-long preliminary hearing if there?s sufficient evidence for Christakos to go on trial.

Christakos is facing charges of impaired driving causing death, failing to stop at an accident and criminal negligence causing death.

Christakos was charged after a June 21, 2003 boating accident that took the life of Samuele Pisani, who was 23 at the time. Christakos was charged by Greater Sudbury Police while on shore about 90 minutes after the accident.

Pisani was a passenger in the boat driven by Christakos, when the boat crashed into another boat, say police.

Pisani was thrown into the lake. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.
