Before police found him cowering in a dumpster, a man led Greater Sudbury Police on a meandering car chase through New Sudbury and a brief foot chase.

At around 1:28 a.m. today, Greater Sudbury Police Service said officers spotted a pick-up truck driving erratically in the area of the Kingsway and Lloyd Street, near downtown Sudbury. Once the driver spotted a cruiser, the vehicle fled at a high rate of speed towards a pre-set spot check, police said in a news release.

But would a little spot check stop this guy? Heck, no, said police. The driver took the sidewalk to go around the spot check, nearly striking a lamp post and several police officers in the process, GSPS said in a news release.

Officers gave chase, and what followed was a 2.5-kilometre chase that meandered through New Sudbury. Police backed off when the truck approached intersections, hoping to prevent the truck from colliding with other drivers.

However, two cruisers were waiting for the pickup at the intersection of Falconbridge Road and The Kingsway. When the driver saw what was waiting for him, he made a quick right turn  into the Ambassador Hotel parking lot.

The driver and a female passenger jumped out of the moving vehicle and fled on foot, leaving the pickup to crash into Extendicare Falconbridge, which is next to the Ambassador.

Officers managed to chase down the woman almost immediately, but it took them a little longer to find the man, who was the driver of the pickup.

The found him cowering in a dumpster a short time later and arrested him.

The passenger in the pickup was released unconditionally, police said, but the driver wasn’t so lucky.

He’s facing eight charges, including the Criminal Code offences of dangerous driving and fleeing from police; and the Highway Traffic Act charges of stunt driving, driving without a licence, driving without insurance, having unauthorized plates on the vehicle, altered plates on the vehicle and driving without a valid plate.
