A 23-year-old man has been fined $490 and has lost six demerit points after nearly hitting a young girl as she stepped off the curb towards her school bus.

The school bus was stopped with its lights flashing on Auger Ave. Oct. 31 at approximately 8:45 am to pick up a young passenger. The man's car stopped momentarily behind the bus before he overtook the bus on the right-hand side, narrowly missing the young girl.

The incident was reported to police by the bus driver and a teacher who witnessed the incident.

The owner of the vehicle, who was not the driver, also faces a $490 fine.

Police are reminding the public that under the Highway Traffic Act, owners of vehicles can still be charged in this type of complaint, even if the owner was not driving at the time.

Police are also reminding motorists to take care when driving, especially during morning and afternoon bus runs.
