Chelmsford man charged with sex assault with weapon after woman in his car called police for help

A 38-year-old Chelmsford man is facing a lengthy list of sexual assault and drug-related charges after a woman called police March 26.

The Kirkland Lake OPP say they received a call for assistance from the woman, who was a passenger in a vehicle on Highway 66 in Eby Township.

Police seized a conductive energy weapon (also known as a taser) and drugs suspected to be methamphetamine and illicit cannabis.  

The suspect was charged with the following offences:

  • Sexual Assault with a Weapon, contrary to section 272(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC),
  • Sexual Assault, contrary to section 271 of the CC,
  • Operation While Impaired, contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the CC,
  • Unauthorized Possession of Weapon, contrary to section 91(2) of the CC,
  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance - Methamphetamine, contrary to section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA),
  • Drive Vehicle or Boat with Cannabis Readily Available, contrary to section 12(1) of the Cannabis Control Act 2017(CCA2017),
  • Drive Consume Cannabis in a Vehicle or Boat, contrary to section 17.1(1a) of the Smoke-Free Ontario Act 2017 (SFOA2017),
  • Novice Driver - Presence of Drug, contrary to section 44.2(4) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA), and
  • Drive While Under Suspension, contrary to section 53(1) of the HTA.

The accused is scheduled to appear in court in Kirkland Lake May 1.

The press release issued by the OPP contained a message that said victims of sexual assault are not alone, giving resources for victims in the Temiskaming area.
