A 24-year-old Grimsby man stole a car in the Hamilton area and crashed it on Highway 144 near Onaping Wednesday morning, resulting in a road closure, said provincial police.

The Ontario Provincial Police have charged the driver with theft of a motor vehicle, possession of property obtained by crime, and dangerous operation. 

Witnesses said the vehicle was being driven in a dangerous manner, said police.

He was released and is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 1.

No charges were laid against the passenger in the vehicle.

Two people were injured after a single-vehicle collision on Highway 144 early Wednesday morning.

Emergency services personnel were called out to the scene of the collision at Marina Road at 7:43 a.m.

Nearby residents actually held a protest about this stretch of road near Onaping earlier this month, saying it is dangerous, and demanding changes. They are planning another protest after today's collision.

The highway was closed for about an hour in both directions to complete the investigation, but has now reopened.

The driver and passenger of the vehicle were transported to Health Sciences North with non-life threatening injuries.

The investigation is still ongoing and further information will be released as it becomes available.

The collision scene on Highway 144 has now been cleared.

Highway 144 is now partially reopened, according to the MTO site @511ONNortheast.

Highway 144 is closed in both directions due to a collision at Gorham's Road and Windy Lake Marina.

The MTO site @511ONNortheastern sent out the notification at 8:27 a.m. Wednesday.
