A veteran Greater Sudbury Police constable will have a criminal record after a judge refused to grant him a conditional discharge on a charge of assaulting a woman he was dating 18 months ago.

Const. Glenn Greenough, 38, was found guilty of assaulting the woman by picking her up, placing her over his shoulder and attempting to force her inside his vehicle the evening of May 10, 2003.

Justice John Keast of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice found Greenough guilty in September. On Monday, he sentenced Greenough to one year?s probation.

A conditional discharge would have resulted in Greenough not having any criminal record if he successfully completed a long stint of probation without getting into any trouble.

As part of his sentence, Greenough must also take a course on partner assault.

Greenough still faces a disciplinary hearing under the Police Services Act. No dates have been set.

Greenough?s future as a police officer could be determined by what happens at the Police Services Act tribunal.

Greenough was arrested after the complainant, a civilian employee with the police service, testified she and Greenough were at a bar when he became angry and demanded they leave.

The woman testified Greenough was, ?very angry...he told me someone was at the bar he didn?t like and he wanted me to leave.?

Although she left with Greenough, she was upset. The assault occurred when he stopped his car and she got out. When she tried to walk away, Greenough grabbed her and spun her around. He then picked her up and placed her over his shoulder and brought her back to the car, she testified.

Greenough said he wanted to leave the bar because he was a police officer and he saw people he believed were associated with an outlaw motorcycle gang.

When asked by Crown attorney Thom Fitzgerald if he was acting as a police officer when he decided to grab his date and place her over his shoulder without her consent, Greenough responded ?at that point in time, I was.?

Keast said Greenough?s version of events was not credible.
