Cops and community kick off Police Week

This years theme is "working together for safer communities"

Greater Sudbury Police Services kicked off Police Week on May 15 with a community event at All Nations Church.

Police Week has taken place in May since 1970 to coincide with Peace Officers Memorial Day, which is recognized internationally on May 15.

Dozens of officers were on hand to meet and greet members of the community, as well as take in the "So You Think You Can Lip Sync" competition.

This year's Police Week theme is "working together for safer communities", which GSPS Chief Paul Pedersen mentioned while speaking at the event.

"We're really trying to impart togetherness and planning for where we want to go and how we're going to get there," said Pedersen.

"We want safe communities that care about each other and we're seeing some of that tonight with the partnerships the GSPS has with the community and all of us coming together for an evening life this."

The GSPS will be posting different community events, activities and initiatives that will be happening around the city over the course of Police Week.
