A 24-year-old University of Western Ontario medical student killed in a crash near Parry Sound Aug. 4 had recently completed an internship shadowing doctors at Sudbury Regional Hospital.

Dinh La, who dreamed of becoming a neurologist, crashed her car while driving to Toronto to visit her boyfriend for the holiday weekend.

The first year medical student was headed south on Highway 69 at about 1:30 pm when the road narrowed from four lanes to two. According to the OPP, she “overmerged” and crossed into oncoming traffic.

La was the top-ranked student coming into the medical school last year.

“Dinh had a long standing desire to be a physician and from her academic performance and her kind, caring personality, we know she would have made an excellent doctor,” said Dr. Francis Chan, the associate dean of admissions and student affairs at the medical school, in a press release.

“We will miss Dinh's smiles, vibrancy and loving personality. The medical community is losing someone who would have been a great physician.”

La's funeral took place Aug. 10 at the Woodland Cemetery in London. Her classmates are planning a memorial service for her in September.
