Greater Sudbury Police says it has charged 12 alleged drug dealers following a sweep of the downtown core.

The GSPS Drug Unit teamed up with the Anishinabek Police Service on the joint investigation into the dealing of illicit drugs in the Nickel City's downtown core.

Police said they received numerous complaints of people dealing drugs in and around downtown businesses.

In August and September 2016, police said, undercover officers engaged with and bought drugs from people GSPS alleges are involved the illegal drug trade.

The investigation resulted in the arrest of 12 suspects, who were charged and arrested this month for 34 counts under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act and 28 more charges under the Criminal Code of Canada.

Among the drugs purchased were cocaine, crack cocaine, marijuana, amphetamines, hydromorphine, morphine and Oxycodone. Police say the street value of the drugs purchased is $7,319. Officers also seized $3,380 in Canadian currency during the sweep.
