The holding cells at Greater Sudbury Police headquarters were pretty full last night as officers arrested a number of alleged gang members as part of a joint operation with the Toronto Police Service, York Regional Police Service and Ontario Provincial Police.

Spokesperson Kaitlyn Dunn confirmed to Sudbury.com that GSPS participated in Project Kronic, a year-long investigation targeting a gang known as the Driftwood Crips led by the Toronto Police Integrated Gun and Gang Task Force in partnership with York Region, OPP and Greater Sudbury police services.

Dunn says search warrants were executed last night leading to arrests.

According to Toronto police, the Driftwood Crips are a criminal organization with cells operating in various communities across Ontario — including the Greater Sudbury region — but also extending their reach into Saskatchewan, Alberta and as far as British Columbia.

Project Kronic includes investigations into homicides, shooting, kidnappings, firearms and drug trafficking.

Dunn could not provide details on the number of suspects arrested or any charges pending, referring those questions to the Toronto Police Service as they are leading the project.

Although earlier today, GSPS said the raids contributed to the release of the two suspects facing animal abuse charges following the release of a graphic video yesterday, police spokesperson Kaitlyn Dunn contacted Sudbury.com to correct the record. She said that initial report was in error and it was always the plan to release the couple on a promise to appear.

Sudbury.com will update this story as new details become available.
