For the second week in a row, Greater Sudbury Police have given eight motorists 90 day licence suspensions for impaired driving.

Police say upon conviction, those drivers could have their licence suspended for an additional year, not to mention legal expenses and court fines.

Officers conducting spot checks in various parts of the city stopped a total of 1,201 vehicles and gave a dozen people 12-hour licence suspensions. Those drivers had their vehicles towed away.

A pair of novice drivers were charged with having a blood alcohol content above zero, resulting in a $110 fine. Sixteen other Highway Traffic Act charges were laid.

Police say they'll continue random spot checks throughout the month in an attempt to reduce the amount of impaired driving in Greater Sudbury.
