One person was killed and four others sent to hospital after a multi-vehicle collision on Highway 17 in the Walden area late Monday afternoon.

Emergency responders were called to the scene at around 5 p.m. May 28, said a press release from the OPP.

One person was confirmed dead at the scene and four others transported to hospital.

The Sudbury OPP Crime Unit is continuing the investigation under the direction of Detective Inspector Rob Matthews of the Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB). Police did not specify in the press release why this unit is investigating the crash.

A post-mortem examination is scheduled for May 31 in Toronto.

There was a fatal collision involving multiple vehicles on Highway 17 in the Lively area Monday evening.

The collision, which was first reported on Twitter by the OPP at 5:21 p.m., closed the highway's eastbound lanes between Lively and Whitefish until shortly after midnight Tuesday morning.
