Hanmer man Andre Côté identified as deceased in June 4 collision on Hwy. 17 in West Nipissing

OPP's investigation into the crash is ongoing

The OPP have identified the deceased in a head-on collision between a pickup truck and a tractor-trailer on Highway 17 in West Nipissing June 4.

Hanmer resident Andre Côté, 29, who was the driver of the pickup truck, was pronounced deceased at the scene.  

The investigation into the crash is continuing with the assistance of an OPP Collision Reconstructionist and an OPP Technical Collision Investigator (TCI).

One person is dead after a head-on collision between a pickup truck and a tractor-trailer on Highway 17 in West Nipissing June 4.

At around 6:15 p.m. Thursday evening,  members from the Nipissing West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) along with West Nipissing Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and West Nipissing Fire Services responded to a two-vehicle collision on Highway 17, near Mosquito Creek Road, in the Municipality of West Nipissing.  

Investigation revealed a westbound pick-up truck crossed the centre line and collided head-on with an eastbound tractor-trailer. 

Upon impact, the pick-up truck became engulfed in flames.  

The driver of the tractor-trailer was transported to hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the pick-up truck, who was the vehicle’s lone occupant, was pronounced deceased at the scene.  

The identity of the deceased has not been confirmed.  

The investigation is continuing with the assistance of an OPP Collision Reconstructionist, an OPP Technical Collision Investigator (TCI) in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner, the Forensic Pathology Service (OCC-FPS) and the Centre of Forensic Sciences (CFS).  

The highway was closed for around five hours.  

A post mortem examination will be conducted in Toronto.  Further information will be released as it becomes available, said the OPP.

Highway 17 was reopened late Thursday night after a fatal collision that occurred just west of the Jocko Point Road in between North Bay and Sturgeon Falls.

The OPP first reported the highway closure on Twitter at 6:36 p.m. June 4. The road was closed from Nova Beaucage Road in North Bay to Golf Course Road in Sturgeon Falls.

The highway was reopened by 11:14 p.m. Thursday night.
