Arson is suspected by Greater Sudbury Fire Services after a blaze gutted much of the ski chalet at Adanac Ski Hill Friday night.

Greater Sudbury Police forensic investigators spent the weekend going over the scene.

The fire started outside the front of the building, where a considerable amount of straw was placed for the safety of skiers unable to stop, and worked its way inside.

There was significant smoke damage according to fire officials, and the fire broke through the roof in some places, but the back and sides of the structure apparently suffered less damage.

The city-owned chalet was insured. Damage was estimated at $50,000.

The office of the Ontario Fire Marshal (OFM) has been notified of the fire, but Greater Sudbury Police will be leading the investigation.

Once a fire is determined to have been deliberately set, it is standard for police to take over the investigation, according to SFS chief training officer Jim Burton.

All the physical evidence has been collected by investigators according to GSPS Staff Sgt. Wayne Foster.

With the investigation in the preliminary stages, the task now is to start sifting through that evidence.
