More charges have been laid by the Manitoulin OPP against five additional people in the racially charged brawl that broke out at Manitoulin Secondary School Sept. 14.

Those charged include:

  • A 17-year-old youth from Sheguiandah First Nation has been charged with causing a disturbance by fighting.
  • A 13-year-old youth from Carnarvon Township has been charged with assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
  • A 17-year-old youth from M'Chigeeng First Nation has been charged with assault.
  • A 20-year-old man from M'Chigeeng First Nation has been charged with uttering threats – cause death or bodily harm.
  • A 15-year-old youth from Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands Township has been charged with causing a disturbance by fighting.

The adult, as well as all but one of the youths, are scheduled to appear in court in Gore Bay on Oct. 31. The 13-year-old youth who was charged is scheduled to appear in court Nov. 14.

The latest charges bring the number of people charged to date in the incident up to 11.

M'Chigeeng First Nation issued a statement about the brawl last week, questioning why only residents of the First Nation had been charged up to that point.

Sudbury.com was given several video clips taken of the brawl showing the extent of the fighting. You can view that video here.
