Update: Police talk man down off Elgin Street roof

Police are asking residents to avoid the Elgin street area as there is currently a man in emotional distress and officers are working to de-escalate the situation.

Updated July 4 at 10 a.m.: Greater Sudbury Police have advised that a man in emotional distress on the roof of several shops on Elgin Street peacefully surrendered to officers. 

The man has been transported to hospital. 

GSPS and Greater Sudbury Fire Services were on scene as officials attempted to talk the man down.

Police are asking residents to avoid the Elgin street area as there is currently a man in emotional distress and officers are working to de-escalate the situation. 

“Officers are on scene on Elgin Street in relation to a man in emotional distress,” said GSPS spokesperson, Kaitlyn Dunn. “Officers have set up a perimeter and community members are asked to remain away from the area in order to allow officers to focus on deescalating the situation.”

The man is wandering along the connected roofs of several buildings on Elgin street downtown.

She adds that officers are working on establishing communication with the man in order to peacefully resolve the matter.
