A man from Ohio was killed in a fiery collision on Hwy. 69 near Parry Sound, across from the Moose Lake Trading Post Saturday Sept. 2.

Around 11:35 am, a collision involving two vehicles occurred, closing the highway for almost 15 hours. Traffic was rerouted on Hwy. 529.

Parry Sound OPP report a 1998 Mercury Grand Marquis, which had two occupants, was travelling northbound and crossed the centre line for an undetermined reason. The Grand Marquis was hauling a small boat trailer. Travelling southbound was an 1997 Kenworth tractor-trailer hauling a full-load of cargo.

The two vehicles collided and the driver of the Grand Marquis, Lewis Younce, 73, of Troy, Ohio, was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger was airlifted to Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto and treated for non life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, Malcolm Debassige of Parry Sound, lost control of the vehicle and ended up in a southbound ditch, where the large vehicle consequently caught on fire and became fully engulfed in flames.

Police are not expected to lay any charges.
