A 79-year-old man, who was reported missing Feb. 8 after failing to return home from a day-long ice fishing trip, was located on Lake Nipissing near the French River Sunday morning.

The body of Leo Arcand, of Sturgeon Falls, was recovered from the lake at 11:30 am.

When Arcand was reported missing, a search was conducted by OPP officers from the Underwater Search and Recovery Unit with the assistance of  the West Nipissing Fire Department by snowmobile and helicopter. Around noon on Feb. 9, a helmet was located floating in open water in an area known as Gibraltar Pass.

Investigation into the incident is continuing.

The OPP are advising extreme caution on all waterways due to the mild winter with above average precipitation, much of which has fallen as rain. The result is thin or no ice in many areas traditionally frozen at this time of year.
