A Greater Sudbury man has been handed down a conditional sentence involving house arrest after being convicted of assaulting a young boy 18 months ago.

Paul Jebreen, 30, was sentenced late last week to a nine-month conditional sentence.

The first six months which will be spent under house arrest, after Justice Andre Guay found him guilty of assaulting a seven-year-old boy in April 2005.

Guay found Jebreen guilty of the assault in June following a trial.

Jebreen was also found guilty of violating a bail condition he not be in the presence of young children unless accompanied by a surety approved by the court.

That condition was put in place after Jebreen was arrested on an unrelated charge.

Jebreen denied during his testimony he was responsible for grabbing the boy, suggesting it was another man who lived nearby.

Guay ruled there was overwhelming evidence Jebreen was the man who grabbed the boy.

Guay said he considered a jail sentence requested by the Crown, but noted Jebreen was a first-time offender and decided a conditional sentence would be appropriate in all the circumstances.
