July 1st bandits strike again

They knew what to take and when to take it. The Red Deer Lake volunteer fire department has been burglarized on Canada Day for the second year in a row.

They knew what to take and when to take it. The Red Deer Lake volunteer fire department has been burglarized on Canada Day for the second year in a row.

?We haven?t even got all the stuff replaced from the last time,? said volunteer fire captain Rick Hogue.

The thieves took a chain saw and a diesel generator, items stolen in 2003 and replaced.

This year, a tool chest with all the station?s tools and petty cash was taken.

?We can?t even operate now,? said Hogue. ?This is crazy. How sad are things when this happens to a volunteer station two years in a row??

The equipment stolen last year, replaced with brand new equipment by the city, was purchased with money raised through bake sales, fishing derbies
and other fundraisers.

Hogue said it was an eerie scene when a Greater Sudbury police constable arrived to take a report.

?The two-by-four I nailed to the wall after the last break-in was still up there. The door was kicked open Saturday morning when we got there, just like last year.?

Hogue hopes some publicity, and the fact the equipment had Station 25 Red Deer Lake engraved on it, will help the police catch the culprits.
