According to the Ontario Provincial Police, a pickup was crossing the highway from Kantola to Fielding Rd. when it was hit by a westbound mini-van. The force of the crash spun the van around and flipped the truck onto its side, striking a stop sign on the corner of Fielding Rd.

During the rescue, firefighters peeled the roof back from the truck to extricate its occupants. An air ambulance landed on the highway, collected the victims and transported them to St. Joseph’s Health Centre in Sudbury.

A passenger in the pickup truck, Aini Rautiainen, 81, was pronounced dead at the scene. She was not wearing a seatbelt.

The truck's driver, Svante Rautiainen, 84, is in critical condition. The occupants of the van, Armand Seguin, 77, and his wife Francoise, 72, were admitted to hospital with non life-threatening injuries but have since been released.

The OPP are continuing their investigation.
