A local senior was killed Friday following a single vehicle collision near the intersection of Municipal Road 15 and Municipal Road 35.

The accident took place around 11:10 pm. A northbound 1996 Saturn station wagon was traveling on the Highway 144 bypass at a high rate of speed, when the driver failed to stop for the red light at Municipal Road 35, say Greater Sudbury Police.

The vehicle continued northbound into the oncoming land and subsequently drove into the ditch, rolling several times.

The 67-year-old driver from Sudbury was restrained by the airbags in his vehicle, but he was transported to hospital and was pronounced dead a short time later.

There was some indication the driver was experiencing medical problems just prior to the collision, say police.

An investigation by the police service's traffic management unit is ongoing. Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident to phone 675-9171.
