Man charged with attempting to abduct child

The Greater Sudbury Police Service's criminal investigations division is continuing its investigation of an incident over the weekend where a 29-year-old male attempted to pull a seven-year-old boy into his vehicle.

The Greater Sudbury Police Service's criminal investigations division is continuing its investigation of an incident over the weekend where a 29-year-old male attempted to pull a seven-year-old boy into his vehicle.

The incident took place Saturday and involved the male approaching the child while the boy was at his own residence playing basketball outside, say police.

The suspect asked the boy if he wanted to ?go for a ride? and he then proceeded to grab him by the wrist and attempted to pull him towards his vehicle.

The boy pulled away and ran into the hosue and told his mother, who subsequently obtained the licence plate number of the vehicle and called police.

The victim and the suspect did not know each other, say police.

Paul Joseph Jebreen, 29, of Eva Street in Sudbury, has been charged with forcible confinement and assault.

The suspect was on bail at the time stemming from other criminal charges with one of the conditions being he was not to associate with or be alone with persons under the age of 16 years unless accompanied by a responsible adult, say police.

He has subsequently been charged with breach of recognizance of bail.

In light of the incident, police are urging parents to be aware of their children's location at all times and if citizens observe suspicious vehicles in areas where children frequent, they are asked to copy the licence plate number and call police.

In other news, police have arrested a young person following the March 12 robbery of a Legace Confectionary on Notre Dame Avenue.

On that night, a young male entered the store and pulled out a knife and demanded money from the lone male attendant.

The suspect left the store after receiving some money.

Following a police investigation, a 17-year-old youth, who cannot be named under provisions of provincial youth justice legislation, has been arrested and charged with wearing a disguise while committing an indictable offence and robbery.

The youth was remanded in custody until a bail hearing can be held.
