As a result of several complaints from school bus drivers in regards to motorists who don't stop for the flashing red lights, especially along Hwy. 144 in Chelmsford, the Sudbury detachment of the OPP increased their patrols in the area.

On the afternoon of Monday May 1, police pulled over a driver who failed to stop for the school bus. The driver was given a $490 fine and six demerit points.

The OPP is reminding motorists that whether they're on a city street or a highway, vehicles travelling on both sides of the road must stop for the flashing red lights of a school bus, regardless of the speed limit. The only exception is on a highway separated by a median, where traffic coming from the opposite direction isn't required to stop.

The OPP says it will continue to patrol s for drivers who aren't stopping for buses and will adhere to a zero-tolerance policy.
