Updated: Three children killed in Jan. 1 crash on Hwy 17

Final update: Three children from Chelmsford were killed in a collision on Highway 17 near the Highway 144 interchange on Jan. 1.

At approximately 8:50 a.m., members from the Nipissing West Detachment of the OPP along with Sudbury Emergency Medical Service and Greater Sudbury Fire Services responded to a single motor vehicle collision in the westbound lanes of Highway 17, near the Highway 144 interchange in Sudbury. 

Preliminary investigation revealed the westbound car left the travelled portion of the roadway and struck a rock cut.

Two passengers were pronounced deceased at the scene. 

They are identified as Destiny Osagie, age 11 and Flourish Osagie, age 10. A third passenger, Britney Osagie, age six, was transported to hospital and succumbed to her injuries. 

The 45-year-old female driver of the vehicle was not injured. A 45-year-old female passenger was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries and another 10-year-old male passenger was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries. 

All occupants of the vehicle are from Chelmsford.  

The investigation is continuing with the assistance of an OPP Collision Reconstructionist and an OPP Technical Collision Investigator.  

The westbound lanes of Highway 17 were closed for seven hours while officers conducted their investigation.  

Updated Jan. 1 at 4:55 p.m.: The Sudbury OPP have fully re-opened Highway 17 following a fatal single-vehicle crash just before 9 a.m. today. 

The crash occurred near the Highway 144 interchange. Police believe the westbound vehicle -- which appears to be a four-door sedan from the photo released by police -- left the roadway and struck a rock cut.

Two passengers were pronounced dead at the scene, while a third passenger succumbed to their injuries in hospital. Two other passengers were injured, one sustaining serious injuries, the other non-life-threatening injuries. The driver was uninjured. 

The identities of the three victims have not been released.

Three people are dead following the crash on Highway 17 near the Highway 144 interchange, said the Ontario Provincial Police.

Const. Michelle Coulombe said the crash involved a single vehicle that had six people in it. They are not yet releasing any details of the victims.

The crash happened at about 8:50 a.m. A reconstructionist is on scene to determine the cause. More details will be provided when it becomes available.

A New Year's day collision on Highway 17 in the Lively area has resulted in multiple fatalities, according to a tweet from the OPP.

The single-vehicle collision was first reported by the MTO Twitter site @511ONNortheastern at 9:20 a.m.

The OPP reported on one of its Twitter sites at around 11 a.m. that Highway 17 is closed in both directions between Regional Road 55 and Highway 144, and will remain closed for several hours.
