There will be 21 new motorized vehicles in the Greater Sudbury Police fleet in 2006.

The purchase of new vehicles is funded through the Police Equipment and Vehicle Replacement Reserve Fund, which is replenished through regular contributions from the police operating budget and receipts of vehicle sales.

The police service's 2006 budget identified $655,000 for the purchase of new vehicles and was approved by the police services board in November and city council in the middle of January.

There will be 13 new marked patrol vehicles, three unmarked vehicles, two snowmobiles, one trailer, one prisoner transport van and two motorcycles.

Seven of the new cars will be 2006 Crown Victoria police interceptors. Two 2006 Harley Davidson Electra Glides are also on order.

The remaining marked patrol vehicles will be 2007 models to be purchased later this year.
