On Monday, two unrelated investigations brought Greater Sudbury Police two next door neighbours.

Members of Greater Sudbury Police's internet child exploitation (ICE) unit tactical unit and integrated crime team – intelligence unit executed the search warrants as a result of two separate child pornography investigations.

Police said one of the investigations revealed a Greater Sudbury resident had been using file sharing networks since 2016 to access and possess child pornography. The second investigation was initiated based on information received from a community member and revealed that another Greater Sudbury resident was also accessing and possessing Child Pornography.

The investigations were unrelated, however, the two individuals live next door to each other resulting, in the search warrants being executed simultaneously. Computers and data storage devices were seized from both residences and child pornography was located.

A 33-year old man was arrested and charged with the following offences:

- Access Child Pornography x23 – Section 163.1(4.1) of the Criminal Code of Canada
- Possession of Child Pornography x23 – Section 163.1(4) of the Criminal Code of Canada
- Make Available Child Pornography x4 – Section 163.1(3) of the Criminal Code of Canada

A 31-year old man was arrested and charged with the following offences:

- Access Child Pornography – Section 163.1(4.1) of the Criminal Code of Canada
- Possession of Child Pornography – Section 163.1(4) of the Criminal Code of Canada

The names of the men are not being released in order to protect the identities of child victims. Both men were held in police custody and were in bail court on March 19 to answer to the charges.

The Greater Sudbury Police’s internet child exploitation unit is part of the Ontario provincial strategy to protect children from sexual abuse and exploitation on the internet, which has been made possible by a grant from the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services and the Ministry of the Attorney General.
