Updated: Woman shot in downtown weapons incident

Police say suspect pointed gun at man during an altercation, who pushed weapon away, resulting in the woman being shot

A 41-year-old woman was taken to hospital with serious injuries after being shot in a weapons incident in downtown Sudbury Thursday evening.

Police say they were dispatched to a weapons complaint at Lisgar Street at Elm Street at around 7:45 p.m. May 4.

They say several individuals were involved in an altercation. During the altercation, a man pointed a firearm at another man.

However, the man pushed the gun away and the gun discharged, leading to a woman who had been involved in the initial altercation being shot.

The 41-year-old woman was transported to hospital with serious injuries by City of Greater Sudbury Paramedic Services.

At 7:50 p.m. officers located the man believed to be responsible for the shooting walking on Brady Street at Minto Street.

The man was taken into custody without incident. Upon searching the man, officers located a gun, a taser and illicit drugs believed to be crystal methamphetamine and fentanyl.

The 38-year-old man has been charged with the following offences under the Criminal Code of Canada and the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA):

• Aggravated assault

• Possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm with ammunition

• Unauthorized possession of a firearm

• Knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm

• Possession of a firearm or ammunition contrary to prohibition order x8

• Unauthorized possession of a weapon

• Careless use of a firearm

• Ponting a firearm

• Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking

• Possession of a schedule I substance

• Failure to comply with release order (two counts)

• Failure to comply with probation order

The suspect’s name cannot be released as the information has not yet been sworn to through the court process. He will appear in court in the near future, as he required medical attention for an unrelated health issue. 

An update will be provided when a court date has been determined.

This is a targeted and isolated incident, as the individuals involved are known to each other, police said.

Greater Sudbury Police say one person was transported to Health Sciences North for medical treatment after a weapons incident in downtown Sudbury at Elm and Lisgar streets Thursday evening.

Police say the complaint was phoned in at 7:45 p.m. May 4. 

A suspect was taken into custody. 

"Incident was targeted & there is no threat to public safety,: said a tweet from police.

Police warned there would be heavy police presence in the area, but by 1:25 a.m., they said the situation had been resolved, and the area was open to the public.
