OPP lay arson charges in Massey

A 48-year-old facing several charges including arson and sexual assault

A harrowing evening at a property in Massey has led to charges for a 48-year-old.

On Nov. 20 at approximately 10:35 p.m., Manitoulin Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers were dispatched to a fire outside a River Street property in Massey.

“The investigation revealed a structure on the property had been damaged by fire and an individual had been assaulted and harassed,” OPP said.

Police arrested a 48-year-old person (the OPP doesn’t release the gender of people accused of crimes) from Sables-Spanish River Township, who was charged with:

  • Arson - Damage to Property, contrary to section 434 of the Criminal Code (CC)
  • Assault - Spousal, contrary to section 266 of the CC
  • Sexual Assault, contrary to section 271 of the CC
  • Harassing Communications, contrary to section 372(3) of the CC 

The accused was held for Bail Court and remanded into custody. The name of the accused will not be released to protect the identity of the victim, OPP said.
