OPP looking for witnesses to fatal single-vehicle Hwy. 144 crash

Wayne Smith of Garson died from his injuries in hospital three days after the Aug. 20 collision

The OPP are looking for witnesses to a fatal Aug. 20 single-vehicle collision on Highway 144 in the Cartier area.

The collision occurred at around 7:45 a.m. Aug. 30 at Crab Lake in Cartier Township.

Investigation revealed the northbound pick-up truck drove off the roadway onto the shoulder and struck a very large rock along the edge of the road.

The driver, 63-year-old Wayne Smith of Garson — the vehicle's lone occupant — was airlifted to hospital. He died from his injuries in hospital three days later.

The investigation is ongoing with the assistance of an OPP collision reconstructionist under the direction of the Office of the Chief Coroner and Forensic Pathology Service.
