The first 10-days of the February OPP crackdown on commercial vehicles has resulted in increased enforcement by officers across the North East Region in an effort to reduce aggressive driving and collisions involving commercial vehicles, said a news release.

Commercial drivers who are travelling over the posted speed limits, especially in bad weather, are a danger to themselves and others.  In the past week, there have been two multi-truck crashes resulting in the death of two people.

In addition to aggressive driving, going too fast for weather conditions and following too closely, the OPP enforced the legislation requiring all vehicles to slow down and move over one lane - if safe to do so - when passing an emergency vehicle parked on the side of the highway with its emergency lights activated - HTA 159.1 (1); 159.1 (2), called ‘Move Over’ Legislation. The OPP laid nine charges as a result of this enforcement.

“OPP officers put their lives on the line every day when they report for duty and they shouldn’t need to worry about being injured - or worse - when making highway traffic stops,” explains Insp. Garry Macpherson, in a news release.  “Drivers need to be alert when they are behind the wheel - there is a lot at stake.”
