OPP UPDATE: Officers were 'attacked with a weapon' in Friday incident on Highway 17

A pursuit late Friday morning on Highway 17 involving Ontario Provincial Police personnel and vehicles resulted in a struggle and the arrest of one man — now facing multiple charges, according to an update from the OPP, including two counts of assaulting police with a weapon.

According to police, the North Bay OPP detachment received numerous traffic complaints regarding a silver truck westbound on Highway 17 in Calvin Township. When police located the vehicle and attempted to pull it over the accused failed to stop for police.  

Officers set up on the highway and a spike belt was deployed near Pine Lake Road in Bonfield Township.  

Officers on the scene say once the vehicle stopped the driver "immediately attacked them with a weapon." Officers report it was during the assault the suspect broke the windows on an OPP K-9 Unit vehicle before he was subdued and arrested. 

The suspect, age 38, from Pembroke, Ont., is charged with:

  • Flight from Police
  • Dangerous Operation
  • Assault Peace Officer (two counts)
  • Assault Peace Officer with a Weapon (two counts)
  • Operation While Impaired - Alcohol and Drugs 
  • Mischief Under $5000 
  • Uttering Threats 
  • Obstruct Peace Officer 

The accused has been remanded into custody and is scheduled to attend the Ontario Court of Justice in North Bay on Tuesday.

The OPP says the accused's driver's licence was subject to a 90-day Administrative Drivers Licence Suspension and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.
