An elderly man arrested after one of his tenants at 325 Hyland Drive complained he pointed a gun out a window minutes before two nearby schools were to let out has been released unconditionally by Greater Sudbury Police.

Sgt. Wayne Foster said Wednesday there are conflicting reports within the police service over whether the man pointed a rifle or his cane during a dispute with a tenant over unpaid rent.

As a result, the man has been released and without new information, no charges can be laid.

He said firearms registered to the man were seized from the house and are being kept in safe storage by police.

Foster said police received a call at 2:40 pm about a gun being pointed in an area not far from St. Denis Catholic School on Hyland Dr. and Wembley Public School on Wembley Dr.

All students at both schools were locked down inside the school while police attended the scene.

Police had Hyland Dr. between Regent and Connaught streets contained with a tactical unit and several marked cruisers.

No shots were fired and no one was injured during the two-hour standoff.

Based on the early information received, Sgt. Dave Treitz said police had no choice but to treat the situation seriously. The fact that the call came in as the two nearby schools were about to let out made the situation more grave.

SWAT team members clad in flak jackets and armed with automatic weapons left the scene about 5 pm.
