Greater Sudbury Police are hoping the public can help locate the driver of a stolen vehicle that led officers on chase in Wahnapitae yesterday.

At around 2:50 p.m., GSPS received a report that a vehicle reported stolen May 24 was parked at an address on Ray Street in Wahnapitae. As officers were en route, they came upon a vehicle matching the description of the one reported stolen on Highway 537.

“The officer initiated the emergency lights and siren on the police cruiser in order to conduct a traffic stop,” GSPS reported. “However, the vehicle did not stop and fled the area.”

The officer broke off the chase and called for back-up from GSPS and the OPP.

The officer didn’t give up looking for the vehicle, though, and a short time later located it parked at an address in Wahnapitae, and used the cruiser to block it in. Police report the driver then drove the stolen vehicle directly at the cruiser in an attempt to get away.

The officer moved the cruiser out of the way and the vehicle made its way down a trail a short distance away. When officers located it, the vehicle had been abandoned.

An arrest warrant is being sought for the person police believed to be responsible.
