Human remains: Woman says she found a skull in the bush behind her home

Police continue to investigate nature of remains found May 29

Updated at 12:05 p.m.: A resident of the housing complex at 725 Bruce Ave. in the Donovan got a shock Sunday when she decided to clean up garbage behind her house.

“I went back to clean up the garbage,” said the woman, who asked that her name not be used.

She said she found what she described as a “small” skull. The lower jaw was missing, but the upper half still had half a tooth stuck in it.

She said bears and other animals drag garbage bags from people's homes back there all the time, which is why she was back there picking up trash. She said she doesn't know if that's how the skull got there, or if someone tossed it there.

“I thought it was fake, because people dump a lot of stuff back there,” she said. “I didn't want to call the cops here for something fake, so I brought it to the police station. One of the officers thought it was real, because there was still half a tooth in it. There's always people back there. Teenagers hang out there, people go there and drink – I just really don't know.”

Greater Sudbury Police Service continues to investigate. Forensic officers bagged some potential evidence around 10:30 a.m. before leaving the scene.

Update 10:28 a.m.: Greater Sudbury Police say they aren't sure if reported remains found on Bruce Avenue are human. The investigation continues.

Staff Sgt Jordan Buchanan told Sudbury.com reporters this morning, the nature of the remains is unknown — police aren't certain they are from a human being. At this point, police are calling it a coroner's investigation until the nature of the remains is known.
