As ice forms on local waterways and the snow appears to be here to stay, snowmobile enthusiasts are preparing for a lengthy season.

Greater Sudbury Police wish all operators a safe winter by reminding riders of the following tips:

- Never consume alcohol or other drugs before or during snowmobile operation.

- Know the waterways and the trails prior to venturing out – let someone know what your travel plans are and what time you expect to return.

- Speed is a contributing factor in most fatal snow machine collisions, therefore slow down. Do not override your headlights and allow for ample reaction time for the unexpected.

- Be prepared for all situations by dressing properly and having the equipment and supplies with you on every excursion.

- Always travel with a partner.

The Greater Sudbury Police Service, the Ontario Provincial Police and the Snowmobile Trail Officer Patrol (S.T.O.P.) will continue to work in partnership to ensure the safety on local trails.
