About 20 cruisers and more than 30 officers from Greater Sudbury Police, including the tactical unit, surrounded a Flour Mill hotel around noon Wednesday after several neighbours heard gun shots.

Police issued a news release in the early afternoon saying one man is in the hospital with non-life threatening injuries after several shots were fired at the Park Hotel.

At around 11:30 am, police said they received a call from a hotel employee saying a patron had been shot. Police are not releasing the victim's identity.

Greater Sudbury Police are looking for white man between 50 and 60-years old, between six and six-foot-five and grey hair. He is dressed in black and left the hotel bar on foot.

According to police, several shots were fired although the type of firearm used is not known.

Police also said the shooting was an isolated incident and area residents shouldn't be concerned for their safety.

Dozens of people gathered on both sides of police tape surrounding the hotel and rumours were spreading quickly in the hour after police arrived.

Some witnesses reported hearing as little as two shots, while another witness, who didn't want his name used, said he heard six "pops" before watching a man run away from the hotel.

A student at a nearby hairdressing school also reported hearing several gunshots fired.

Several witnesses said the shooting took place inside the main bar area of the Park Hotel.

One officer took down the license plate numbers of every car parked in adjacent parking lots near the hotel, while other officers searched laneways and back yards in the area.

Police are asking that anyone with information about the shooting contact them at 675-9171.
