A bad crash on Lorne Street on June 6 that put three people in the hospital has resulted in charges for the person police believe caused the crash.

Just before 2 p.m. on June 6, GSPS was called to a head-on collision involving two vehicles on Lorne Street between Applegrove Street and Oak Street.

Police said the investigation revealed that a red SUV with a single occupant travelling towards Elm Street crossed the centre line and struck a white SUV (carrying three people) travelling in the opposite direction. That investigation required the closure of Lorne Street for four hours while the Traffic Management Unit did their work.

“Upon speaking with the driver of the red SUV, officers noticed visible signs of impairment,” the police said today. “A Drug Recognition Expert and member of the Traffic Management Unit completed the relevant tests and it was determined that the man was impaired.”

The three men (ages 24, 27 and 32) in the white SUV remain in hospital in serious, but stable condition, police said.

The 29-year-old driver of the red SUV, has been charged with three counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, and three counts of driving while impaired by drugs.

He has also been charged with possession of a Schedule 1 substance because after he was placed under arrest, officers reported finding the man in possession of almost $1,000 worth of suspected purple heroin.

The man’s name cannot be released at this time as the information has not yet been sworn to through the Court process. He will appear in Court on Aug. 5 to answer to the charges.
