Incident occurred at around 6:15 p.m. Easter Sunday

Updated April 2 at 7:45 a.m.

The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating the shooting of a 24-year-old man by Greater Sudbury Police at the downtown transit terminal in Sudbury April 1.

At around 6:15 p.m., Sudbury police responded to a call of a man causing a disturbance at the transit terminal. In a press release, police described the man as “aggressive.”

There was an interaction between officers and the man, and one officer discharged his firearm, said the SIU.

The man was struck and subsequently transported to hospital for treatment.

Greater Sudbury Police say that the SIU has “invoked its mandate” and they are prohibited from releasing any additional information about the incident. They're directing any inquiries to the SIU.

However, a City of Greater Sudbury press release sheds a little more light on exactly what happened during the incident described above.

“An individual armed with two knives attempted to gain access to the transit security office, prompting staff to take refuge in a secure area of the facility,” said the city press release.

“Greater Sudbury Police Services were called and quickly responded to the incident. A city employee has been taken to hospital with minor injuries, and is in stable condition. No other residents were involved in the incident.”

The transit terminal is unavailable for use during the investigation, but transit services continue to operate as usual. Buses are temporarily parking on Elm Street.

Four SIU investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to this incident.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529. The unit is also urging anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the SIU website.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.

Under the Police Services Act, the director of the SIU must consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
