The 2007 MTO/OPP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Initiative begins Feb. 6 as the authorities intensify their presence on northern Ontario highways.

This is the eleventh consecutive year this road safety initiative will be launched in the northeast.

Officers will patrol the highways to check for unsafe commercial vehicles, aggressive and fatigued drivers, and those without a seatbelt.Enforcement teams will target the Hwy. 69 corridor (Mactier to Sudbury), Hwy. 11 (Huntsville to Hearst), Hwy. 17 (Mattawa to Sault Ste. Marie) as well as secondary highways within the defined area.

The OPP says there is more than 1.1 million commercial vehicles operating on our highways. This represents an increase of approximately 38 percent since 1988. Despite this increase, the number of fatal truck collisions in northeastern Ontario has steadily declined.

During the last ten years, almost 17,000 commercial vehicles have been stopped while just over 3,800 have been inspected to ensure they are safe for the road. Of those, approximately 31 percent were removed from service due to a mechanical defect.

This initiative will conclude May 4.
