Police warn of counterfeit money

The Greater Sudbury Police Service has, in the past, received complaints of counterfeit Canadian currency. The denominations have been in 5, 10, 20, 50 and even 100 dollar bills.

In order to assist everyone in recognizing false bills, the Bank of Canada provides the information on their website: www.bankofcanada.ca/en/banknotes. The information is easily accessible and free of charge.

If you suspect you have been handed a counterfeit bill, the Bank of Canada website request you do the following:

explain to the individual that you think the bill may be counterfeit and request another bill
advise them that the suspected note should be given to local police for verification
notify the local police of an attempt to pass a suspected counterfeit bill
avoid putting yourself at risk.
