AZILDA - After being caught driving more than 70 km/h over the speed limit by Greater Sudbury Police April 18, a 67-year-old man is facing multiple charges.

Police stopped the driver — who was driving at a speed of 152 km/h in an 80 km/h zone — on Municipal Road 35. He was charged with stunt driving, failing to use a signal when changing lanes, following too closely and having a cracked and obstructed windshield.

The charges were laid as part of Greater Sudbury Police's focus this past week on distracted drivers and monitoring the speed of motor vehicles.

Police also charged a 25-year-old man with stunt driving on April 14 after he lifted the front wheel of his motorcycle from the road while accelerating from an intersection on The Kingsway.

Both drivers had their licences suspended and their vehicles impounded for one week. If convicted of stunt driving, they could face fines and six demerit points.

Since April 4, Greater Sudbury Police have also issued 47 charges to motorists for driving a motor vehicle while using a hand-held communications device.

“The primary task of each driver is to operate your motor vehicle in the safest manner possible, which means following the posted speed limits, abiding the rules of the road and driving with due care and attention,” said a press release from Greater Sudbury Police.

“Driving a motor vehicle while operating or using a hand-held electronic device is extremely dangerous, as the driver's attention is taken away from their surroundings.”
