Big Nickel Mine Road crash: Vehicle struck rock cut, claimed the life of driver

Severe injuries stymie efforts to identify driver

Updated at 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 7: The crash on Big Nickel Mine Road late Sunday night claimed the life of the driver, the sole occupant of the vehicle.

At around 11 p.m. on Jan. 6, Greater Sudbury Police said a green Buick four-door sedan was travelling at “a very high speed,” when it left the roadway and struck a rock cut on Big Nickel Road at Municipal Road 35, claiming the driver’s life.

Greater Sudbury Police Service Traffic Management Unit investigated the incident. 

Due to the extensive injuries sustained by the driver as a result of the collision, the individual’s identity has not yet been confirmed. 

“We are working in collaboration with the Centre of Forensic Science to obtain a positive identification for the individual. An update will be provided at that time,” police said in a news release.

Police are looking for any witnesses to the crash to contact them, or anyone who may have information about the vehicle involved.

Updated Jan. 7 at 9:31 a.m.: Sudbury.com has learned the motor vehicle incident that occurred last night near Elm Street and Big Nickel Mine Road involved a single vehicle. 

Although describing the incident as "serious," Greater Sudbury Police have not released any details on the incident, including the nature of the incident or if anyone was injured.

There was a "serious" motor vehicle collision in the area of Elm at Big Nickel Mine Road overnight.

Greater Sudbury Police first sent out a tweet about the crash at 11:31 p.m. Sunday, asking motorists to avoid the area and find alternate routes.

Police tweeted at 7:08 a.m.Monday morning that the collision scene is now cleared and the roadway fully open. The collision is still under investigation by the traffic management unit.

No information was provided on injuries, if any.
