Seven people have been arrested as more than 3,000 street-level doses of Fentanyl have been seized by Greater Sudbury Police Service.

In November of 2019, the Greater Sudbury Police Integrated Crime Team (ICT), working in collaboration with the Ontario Provincial Police Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau (OCEB) started multiple investigations, with the intention to disrupt drug trafficking operations entering and operating within the City of Greater Sudbury.

Shortly after 1 p.m. on Jan. 23, officers from the Greater Sudbury Police ICT and tactical unit, along with the Ontario Provincial Police OCEB and OPP North East Region Community Street Crime Unit, executed search warrants at six locations across Greater Sudbury.

The seven individuals have been charged with the following:

- A 29-year-old woman for Possession of a Schedule I Controlled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking, Possession of Property Obtained by Crime and Possession of a Controlled Substance;

- A 48-year-old man for Possession of a Schedule 1 Controlled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking and Possession of Property Obtained by Crime;

- A 46-year-old man for Possession of a Schedule I Controlled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking;

- A 52-year old man for Possession of a Controlled Substance.

During the search warrant, detectives seized 305 grams of suspected Fentanyl (estimated street value of $122,000), 415 grams of suspected cocaine (estimated street value of $41,500), and $2,900 in Canadian currency and $100 in American currency.

“The amount of Fentanyl seized represents over 3,050 street level doses that could have reached the community,” said police in a news release. “The quantity and street value of the seized substances is significant.”

The 26-year-old man and the 29-year-old woman are being held for bail. The remaining individuals were released from custody to attend a later court date.

The Drug Enforcement Unit of the Integrated Crime Team remains committed to working collaboratively with the OPP Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau and will continue to focus its efforts on major crime operations that pose a direct and elevated threat to the safety, security and wellness of our community, said the news release.

The Integrated Crime Team aims to identify and disrupt organized crime in Greater Sudbury through innovative technology, collaborative partnerships and traditional police work, resulting in the arrests of those involved, holding them accountable for their criminal activities and the seizure of illegal drugs, prohibited firearms and proceeds of crime.
