The Greater Sudbury Police Services Board announced Wednesday that Supt. Sheilah Weber is the next deputy chief of police.

Weber will be officially sworn in at a ceremony on Jan. 17. She replaces Al Lekun, who is retiring.

“Sheilah has over 30 years of exceptional police service and significant experience,” the police said in a statement. “Her current role as superintendent of executive services includes being in charge of business and crime analytics, the Aboriginal liaison unit, procedure development, diversity and inclusion, corporate communications and media relations.”

Her extensive background in criminal investigations has seen her assigned as case manager and lead investigator on several complex files, the statement said.

“Through strong leadership, innovation, technology and collaborative partnerships, she is committed to work on initiatives and strategies to enhance community safety and well-being.”

The board thanked Lekun for his many years of dedicated service and wished “him all the best in his retirement.

“We look forward to what the future holds with Sheilah as the new deputy chief as of Jan. 17,” the statement said. “There is no doubt she will continue to make us exceptionally proud and do everything in her power to make the City of Greater Sudbury an even better place to live.”
