A member of the Greater Sudbury Police Service has been charged with one count of sexual assault following an investigation by the province's Special Investigations Unit (SIU).

James Cornish, Director of the SIU, said in a news release issued Monday Sgt. Robert Geick has been charged.

On Nov. 20, 2006, the Greater Sudbury Police Service notified the SIU a female complainant had come forward with a complaint of sexual assault. As a result, two SIU investigators were assigned to investigate an incident which allegedly took place in the fall of 1992, in which the woman alleged Geick sexually assaulted her.

Based on the evidence gathered during the investigation, it has been determined there are sufficient grounds to lay the charge of sexual assault, said Cornish.

Geick has been charged and released on a promise to appear in court. He's scheduled to make his next court appearance on March 7.

Prosecutors with the Ministry of the Attorney General will be handling this case, said Cornish.

As this matter is now before the courts and in consideration of fair trial interests of the charged officer and the community, the SIU will not be making any further statements, said Cornish.

The SIU is a civilian government agency that investigates the circumstances involving police and civilians, which have resulted in serious injury or death. The director of the SIU has the authority to decide whether or not charges are warranted based on the findings of an investigation.

The director's decision is reported to the Attorney General.
